On Wednesday a very special man passed away.

I guarantee that you didn’t hear about his passing on tv, the internet, twitter, or even the paper.

Many of you though are well familiar with my cousin T. (She is technically my cousin in law as she is married to my cousin, but we decided long ago to outlaw the in law status.) From time to time I talk about her here and she holds the title of being the only person to ever guest post on my blog. Catherine’s Coach STILL get dozens of hits per day.

Her father, Bernard “Pop” King, helped eat that fantastic cake as he has lived with T. and family for the past several years in their 115 year old home.
Sadly, Pop King left the building and the earth on January 18th.

Pop had just celebrated his 70th birthday last Saturday. It was a grand day.
He’s been retired for quite a few years now as he has been battling a long term illness.

But in his prime Pop was truly a special force of nature and a well loved member of his community.

Pop held a job that many of us probably do not give much thought to. We just expect to see our mailbox full day after day.

Pop was a mail carrier and also kept the United States postal trucks running in tip top shape.

Why just think of what we would miss out on if it wasn’t for Pop?

Pop was the purest essence of a true, devoted friend, possessing good character who brought happiness to many.

I shall always remember his kindness to my children. Pop had just one child (he said she was enough :) cousin T, and one grandchild, Miss M.
But that didn’t stop Pop from loving on my two and making sure they called him “Pop”. On a delightful visit two years ago Pop pulled out his wallet and showed it to Sweet Boy and said, “Look at all these girls. They’re pretty, but I sure need a boy in my wallet.” Upon our return home Sweet Boy would not rest until we found a photo of himself for Pop’s wallet.

Pop I am sure was responsible for half of the some 80,000 votes that were collected when I tried out for Oprah’s OWN network two years ago. I will miss his rugged handsomeness, his sense of humor and loyal patriotism which often showed up in my email inbox.
Everyone should have such a POP of happiness in their lives.

You are welcome to leave a comment for cousin T and our Nene ~ Pop’s lovely wife of 46 years. They are regular readers of the DTA blog.

So sorry to read of the loss of someone so wonderful and cherished. The world needs more people with the love and grace this man obviously had in abundance to inspire such a heartwarming post.
Prayers and healing thoughts to his loved ones, family and chosen, as you come together to remember and honour his life.
He sounds like my kind of man. Please tell your "T" that I send my deepest sympathy and empathy. I know what it's like to lose a father whom you love so much.
Oh, that we would all learn to be the blessing to others that he clearly was.
Laura I am so sorry to hear this. Some of the most special people in the world are not well known or even necessarily honored for their services!! You DO honor his life!

Sounds like a truly wonderful man, one that we are so lucky to know as they pass through this life. Sending prayers to you and your family.
I am so sorry for your loss! Pop sounded like a wonderful man. A King indeed!
Good morning, Laura!
Thanks so much for this beautiful tribute to our "Pop-a-lope!" We miss him so, but also know his struggle is over and he is at peace.
Thanks, also, to to the "adorable" folks here that left such comforting comments. We really appreciate you all.
Love and thanks,
Your "T," the royal PEA and NeNe and the whole family here
Sad to hear of his passing. Postmen have always been revered in my family. In fact, my youngest daughter wanted to be one (before settling in on being a Chemist). Thinking of you and your family. Kit
So sorry for their loss... he sounds like he was an amazing man!
Your post is a beautiful tribute to "Pop" King - obviously a special man who enriched the lives of those who new him. May the pain of loosing him be replaced by the joy of knowing him.
Warm regards.
Laura, "T" and Nene,
A beautiful tribute to a special man. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Know that POP is in good company and no doubt exchanging jokes and 'war stories' with my Da.
Love, Deborah

PS Whenever I hear the words sweet tea I automatically think of Laura Gunn's cousin. :)
I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man! I know what it is like to lose a dear, dear father, and so I ache for you too, T. And NeNe, I don't know what it is like to lose a wonderful husband, but I do sympathize. I know how my mother and stepmother have mourned. May you have peace in your heart, comfort in your quiet moments, and joy from your memories.
Oh goodness, I will send T a note tonight....so sorry for the family's loss, and Pop would surely be proud of such a wonderful life and such a lovely tribute....xxoo A

It sounds as if the whole world is just a little dimmer with Pop's light gone from it. But I know he shines on in your hearts. I love your blog and am instantly going to follow you.
What a wonderful tribute Laura. Pop was surely a special man in many people's lives and will be missed. Ann
What a wonderful tribute to Pop Laura. sounds like a wonderful man and that you were blessed that he was a part of your life.
Oh, he sounds like the most adorable man. The kind we all wish we had in our lives and of whom there are too, too few!
When my grandfather died, I remember someone telling us to take comfort in the memory of the love he had for us. At first, that seemed to make his loss only more painful, but since then & very gradually, it has brought many smiles. My thoughts and prayers to all of you.

Far too young, God Rest his Soul. My thoughts are with you all at this very sad time
